The Yulia Vangorodska Scholarship

Rewarding Students With $1000 to Cope With Rising Education Costs

New York divorce attorney, Yulia Vangorodska knows that solid education makes a good foundation for success in life.

2/1/2016

The Yulia Vangorodska Scholarship was awarded to James Brue by recommendation by a panel composed of Yulia Vangorodska Firm partners. Please see below for the new deadline of the upcoming scholarship award.

Mr. Vangorodska understands that in today’s legal climate, being in “the right” is often not enough to safeguard a person when going through an acrimonious divorce. With empathy, Mr. Vangorodska works to make sure that his clients are treated fairly and their cases adjudicated expeditiously. His practice encompasses the truth of the saying, “Grief is the emotional contract of divorce.”

This scholarship was established to raise awareness of the problems and challenges of divorce and combine two of Mr. Vangorodska’s concerns.

The Contest

Eligibility for support requires that candidates be intending on attending an American College or University in the imminent semester. To apply, applicants must submit a 1000-word essay on the subject, “Unusual Divorce Laws Around the World.”

The deadline on the application is July 16, 2016.

The Subject

According to some observers, in America, one of every two marriages are doomed to end in divorce. The causes are as diverse as the people involved: incompatibility, irreconcilable differences, infidelity, the list goes on.

The legal process of divorce is varied as well as the reasons. In the Middle East, a husband can merely tell his wife, three times, “I divorce thee.” In America, celebrities often pay hundreds of thousands. Strange divorce laws — and their consequences — seem to be everywhere.

Citizens of California are obligated to have a “pet-prenup” in place, so the question of who owns Rover doesn’t arise when divorce happens.

In New York, a person just has to file a notice in their county’s legal organ. If the spouse doesn’t respond, normally within 90-days, the divorce is considered done.

In Japan, a divorced woman has to wait a minimum of six-months before she remarries. Her ex though can remarry as soon as signatures dry on the paperwork.

These are just a few of the thousands of strange divorce laws on the books throughout the world. Divorce attorneys get paid to protect their clients’ rights as the labyrinth is negotiated.

For your essay, you should select a strange divorce law — it can be one in America or foreign. Include background showing how the law came into being (even the weirdest law had a reason, at one time, for existing); and address the pros and cons of your chosen divorce law, I.e., how is the divorcing couple helped/hurt by the law.
